Maine Cancer Foundation - Programs

Programs

While funding grants is our number one priority, we also seek to address cancer issues unique to Maine by collaboration or targeted funding. The broad community that encompasses Maine Cancer Foundation is aware of the complex social, demographic and economic issues that impact prevention, early detection, and treatment of cancer. Because we are independent and fundamentally grassroots we can easily move to make a difference.

For instance,

  • Maine’s colon cancer rate is higher than the national average. MCF partnered with the American Cancer Society to support Healthy Maine Partnerships in the delivery of programs to encourage screening.
  • With a large immigrant population in the state, the Foundation supported an effort to understand cultural differences around end of life care.
  • In hopes that seeing a pink license plate may remind women to have their annual mammogram, while raising funds for Maine-based breast cancer programs, MCF was instrumental in having a breast cancer license plate created.
  • Because knowing treatment outcomes is vital to meeting best practice guidelines, the Foundation helped fund the initial National Comprehensive Cancer Network’s (NCCN) community-based program.
  • To aid researchers who need donated tumors as well as blood samples to further their work, the Foundation helped improve MMC’s Blood and Tissue Bank.

In addition, the Foundation funds an annual dinner lecture for Oncology Nurse Society’s in Maine; distributes at no charge, volumes of the photo-essay book “Portraits of Courage, Voices of Hope”; supports the Breast Health Leadership Award presented annually at the Blaine House Tea hosted by the First Lady.
